History
The Cricketers Arms - Ockley
-
The building is believed to date back to the 15th century, making it one of the oldest surviving structures in the village.
-
It features timber-framed construction, typical of medieval English architecture, with later additions and restorations that reflect its continuous use.
-
The pub sits along Stane Street, a Roman road that once connected London to Chichester, adding to its historical context as a stopover for travelers.
-
Historically, The Cricketers Arms served as a coaching inn, offering rest and refreshment to those journeying along Stane Street.
-
Its name reflects the village’s long-standing association with cricket, a sport deeply rooted in English rural life.
-
Over the centuries, it has evolved into a community hub, hosting events, meals, and gatherings that reflect the changing social fabric of Ockley.
Among the many patrons who’ve passed through its doors, none left a mark quite like the late actor Oliver Reed. Known for his boisterous personality and love of a good drink, Reed was a frequent visitor to The Cricketers Arms during his time in Surrey. Locals still recall his larger-than-life presence - whether holding court at the bar, spinning tales by the fireplace, or sharing laughter with fellow drinkers.
According to accounts from locals and those who knew the actor, Reed once hid inside the wide chimney during a lunchtime session. Later, when the pub reopened for its evening service, he emerged in a white suite, covered in soot while shouting "Ta dah!" or "Ho! Ho! Ho! I'm Santa Claus!"
Though The Cricketers doesn’t officially commemorate Reed with plaques or memorabilia, his legacy lingers in the anecdotes shared by longtime residents and the occasional nod in reviews and local lore. The pub’s unspoiled charm and welcoming atmosphere made it a natural haunt for Reed, whose affinity for traditional English inns was well known.

ABOUT US
Alan & Kerry both Ockley locals took over the Cricketers Arms in August 2022 with a view to try and recreate the old kind of pub scene where a large cross section of the community mix in their local pub. Both having full time jobs they have been gratefully helped by members of the local community all offering their services for free.
Our aim is to offer the best possible quality ales, lagers and ciders at affordable prices. So much so, that more and more people now share the wonderful atmosphere at the Cricks
